Meet Dr Ann Martin, Ph.D.

(she/her)

Hi, nice to meet you. I’m a clinical psychologist, researcher, and kind-hearted nerd.

Woman with long brown hair smiling, wearing a blue floral shirt and a conference lanyard, standing against a black background.

I won’t:

  • Tell you it’s all in your head.

  • Freak out when you tell me difficult things.

  • Pretend that thought challenging will magically solve all problems.

I will:

  • Treat you with kindness, dignity, and respect.

  • Listen, and try to genuinely understand what you are going through.

  • Present you with information and strategies informed by research evidence, so we can work out together which aspects might be helpful in your circumstances.

  • Treat you as a competent adult, be direct where needed, and ask if you’ve done your home practice!

  • Hold hope, when you are struggling to.

My Experience and Qualifications

My professional experience has included clinical care, research, and supervision. Since registering in 2013, I have provided clinical care in a range of settings including private practice, a university counselling service, a specialised anxiety and depression clinic, across research clinical trials, a HIV clinic, and transitional housing.

I completed my training at the University of New South Wales, where I attained: a Bachelor of Psychology (Hons, Class 1); Master of Psychology (Clinical); Ph.D. (Clinical Psychology). My early training was heavily focused on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), although I have since completed additional training and/or supervision in:

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

  • Schema Therapy, and

  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).

My clinical approach is “formulation driven”, which is a fancy way of saying that it’s really tailored to your individual symptoms and contributing factors. Although I am extremely grounded in research evidence, I recognise that your individual experience is unique to your circumstances and I personalise therapy to meet your specific needs.

Since 2021, I have also worked in various research roles at Black Dog Institute. I co-developed an imagery-based intervention for suicide imagery (Integrated Skills for SUicide Imagery; I-SUIM), provided research and clinical supervision for clinical trials evaluating treatments for workplace burnout, anxiety, and depression, and led a review of suicide aftercare services for the Commonwealth Department of Health and Aged Care.

I am passionate about engaging with ongoing learning, education, and development. I regularly attend additional training, conferences, and peer supervision sessions. I presented my own research and practice in mental imagery and suicide prevention at conferences, seminars, and with a group of imagery rescripting trainers/ researchers.

I love what I do, and would be delighted to support you on your mental health journey.
